Rich homemade holiday gravy starts with a peanut-butter-colored roux and our homemade holiday house stock. Worcestershire, fresh thyme, and black pepper bring savory flavor to the table.
What You Need for Holiday Gravy
- ½ stick (4 tablespoons) butter
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups house stock
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon chicken bouillon
- Fresh thyme, black pepper, and salt to taste

How to Make Homemade Holiday Gravy
Melt the butter in a saucepan and whisk in the flour. Cook, stirring, until the roux reaches a peanut-butter color. Gradually whisk in the house stock until smooth. Add Worcestershire, chicken bouillon, thyme, and black pepper. Simmer until the gravy thickens, then taste and add salt as needed. Makes approximately 4 cups.
Serving and Make-Ahead Tips
Serve the gravy with turkey, chicken, mashed potatoes, or dressing. It will thicken as it cools; whisk in a splash of stock when reheating if needed. Taste before adding salt, since the stock and bouillon contribute seasoning.
