Whether you’re looking to impress guests at a dinner party or simply craving a comforting meal, this recipe is sure to become a favorite in your culinary repertoire.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Steak: Choose a tender cut like flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced for quick cooking.
- Lo Mein Noodles: These can typically be found in the international aisle of your grocery store.
- Vegetables: Use a colorful mix such as bell peppers, carrots, broccoli florets, and snow peas, etc are all fair game. (Use what you have!)
- Garlic and Ginger: Freshly minced for aromatic depth.
- Soy Sauce: For that essential salty umami flavor.
- Sesame Oil: Adds a nutty aroma and enhances the overall richness.
- Oyster Sauce: Provides a touch of sweetness and depth of flavor.
- Cornstarch: To thicken the sauce and coat the steak.
- Green Onions: Chopped for garnish and added freshness.
- Vegetable or Chicken Broth: For creating a flavorful sauce base.
Begin by knocking out all of your prep work. Prep your veggies and slice the steak. Pro Tip: throw the steak in the freezer for 30-60 minutes to help make it easier to slice.

Next, prep your sauce. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, AP and chicken bouillon, sesame oil, and a tablespoon of cornstarch. My secret ingredient in the sauce is a little liquid smoke (no more than a tsp) – this brings the authentic take-out flavor.
Once the steak is thinly sliced, season with AP seasoning. Keep the seasoning simple here because the sauce is loaded with flavor (and salt).

All-Purpose Seasoning
Warm your skillet over medium-high and sear your steak on both sides. Once you get some nice crust and color, remove the steak and set it aside.
Stir fry your veggies in the same skillet until they begin to get tender. Meanwhile, cook your lo mein per package instructions and drain.
In the same skillet, add your sauce and lo mein noodles. Mix to combine and then add in the steak. Taste for seasoning and once it’s right where you want it, plate it up and serve.
Tips for Success:
- Slice the Steak Thinly: This ensures quick cooking and tenderness.
- Cook Over High Heat: Stir-frying over high heat preserves the vibrant colors and crisp textures of the vegetables.
- Adjust Seasonings: Taste and adjust the sauce to your preference with additional soy sauce or a dash of sesame oil.
Embrace the Fusion
Steak Lo Mein represents the best of both worlds – the comforting appeal of Chinese noodles and the robust satisfaction of steak. It’s a dish that invites creativity and personalization, so don’t hesitate to add your favorite vegetables or tweak the seasonings to suit your taste buds.
