Chicken & Waffles Recipe by Mr. Make It Happen
Introduction
When it comes to food, there are a few combinations that seem like they were destined to be together. One such pairing that has captured the hearts and taste buds of many is the delightful marriage of chicken and waffles. Originating from the soulful kitchens of Southern America, this dynamic duo has transcended its humble beginnings to become a beloved comfort food staple enjoyed by people around the world.
A Fusion of Flavors and Cultures
At first glance, chicken and waffles may seem like an odd coupling — crispy fried chicken atop a fluffy waffle? However, this seemingly unconventional pairing is a testament to the beauty of fusion cuisine. The crispy, savory goodness of the fried chicken perfectly complements the sweet, fluffy waffle, creating a harmonious blend of flavors and textures that tantalize the senses with every bite.
The origins of chicken and waffles can be traced back to the African American community in the Southern United States, particularly in regions like Harlem, where it emerged as a popular soul food dish in the early 20th century. This culinary tradition has deep roots in African American culture, with some tracing its origins to the Pennsylvania Dutch influence on Southern cuisine.
A Culinary Icon
Over the years, chicken and waffles have evolved from a humble home-cooked meal to a culinary icon, earning a place on the menus of diners, cafes, and high-end restaurants alike. Its popularity has spread far and wide, with variations of the dish popping up in eateries across the globe.
Part of the allure of chicken and waffles lies in its versatility. Whether served as a hearty brunch option, a comforting dinner, or even as a late-night indulgence, this dish never fails to hit the spot. The contrast of flavors and textures makes it a satisfying meal for any time of day.
The Art of Pairing
While the classic combination of fried chicken and buttermilk waffles remains a timeless favorite, chefs and home cooks alike have put their own spin on this beloved dish, experimenting with different seasonings, toppings, and accompaniments. From spicy chicken paired with maple syrup to savory herb-infused waffles served with honey butter, the possibilities are endless.
When it comes to pairing chicken and waffles, the key is balance. The richness of the chicken should be complemented by the lightness of the waffle, while any accompanying sauces or toppings should enhance, rather than overpower, the flavors of the dish.
Today we are doing it right – perfectly fried chicken, homemade waffles, and a bourbon cream sauce. When it comes to the fried chicken component, you can use whatever piece of chicken you prefer. Today, I am using tenders – mostly because I like to be able to use a knife and fork to eat the chicken and waffles in a single bite together.
Marinate your chicken in buttermilk and hot sauce. You can season the marinate with whatever you like (salt, pepper, garlic, onion powder)
We are using my seasoned flour today for this recipe which you can find here (Mr. Make It Happen Seasoned Flour)– Otherwise, check out the simple recipe below.
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 tablespoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
Feel free to use boxed or pre-packaged waffle mix if you prefer. Otherwise, try this recipe.
Waffles:
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 3/4 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 3 -4 tbsps sugar
- 4 tsps baking powder
- pinch of salt
- 1-2 tsps vanilla extract
Mix the dry ingredients together and then mix the wet ingredients separately – and then combine them together.
Optionally – we are making a Bourbon Cream Sauce. For that we need 1/2 stick of butter, 1/2 cup of white sugar, 1 shot of bourbon, 1 tbsp vanilla extract, and 1 pinch of sugar.
Combine the sauce ingredients and whisk constantly – simmer for 2-3 minutes.
Bread the chicken and heat your oil to 350 degrees. Fry the chicken for 6-8 minutes or until golden brown and 165 degrees internal temperature.
Once the chicken is done, let it drain on a wire rack and make your waffles.
A Celebration of Comfort and Flavor
In a world filled with culinary trends and fads, chicken and waffles remain a timeless classic — a comforting reminder of home and hearth. Whether enjoyed at a bustling diner with friends or savored in the comfort of your own kitchen, this beloved dish never fails to bring joy to those who partake in its deliciousness.
